South Wales homeowners choose Hywel Jones Tree Services because we are a fully insured, NPTC-qualified, family-run team with more than 40 years of combined experience who treat every garden as our own. Hywel Jones Tree Services began in 2013 as a family business founded by Hywel and his partner Kate, working out of Torfaen in the heart of South Wales. What started as a passion for trees and the Welsh landscape has grown into a trusted team of qualified tree surgeons with more than 40 years of combined experience between them.
We are proud to be part of the Pontypool and Torfaen community. From the wooded slopes around Pontypool Park and the ancient woodlands of the Eastern Valley to the leafy gardens of Cwmbran, Newport and Cardiff, we understand the trees that shape our region and the weather that tests them. That local knowledge means we recommend the right work at the right time, every time.
Because we own all of our own equipment rather than hiring it in, we keep our costs sensible and pass those savings on to you with fair, transparent pricing and no hidden surprises. We treat every client with the utmost respect and every garden as if it were our own.
Caring for trees and caring for the environment go hand in hand. Wherever possible we recycle the wood we remove, turning it into seasoned firewood and wood chip rather than sending it to landfill, and we always advise on retaining and protecting healthy trees for the wildlife and beauty they bring to South Wales.

Absolutely. Hywel Jones Tree Services carries £5 million public liability and £10 million employer's liability insurance, so you and your property are fully protected. Our arborists are NPTC qualified and every job is carried out to British Standard BS3998 for tree work — the recognised benchmark for safe, professional arboriculture.
Tree work is always priced per job, because every tree, hedge and site is different. The main things that affect the cost are the size and species of the tree, how easy it is to access, whether climbing or a cherry picker is needed, how much waste is produced, and whether the tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order. Rather than guess, we give you an honest, no-obligation quote after a free site visit, so the price you see is the price you pay. Because we own all of our own equipment — chippers, grinders and access kit — rather than hiring it in, we avoid hire mark-ups and keep our prices fair and competitive. Everything is explained clearly up front, in writing, with absolutely no hidden charges, and you only pay once the work is finished and you are happy with it.
Yes. We provide a 24-hour emergency tree service across South Wales for storm-damaged, fallen or dangerous trees. If a tree is threatening your home, blocking access or has come down in bad weather, call us on 07525 855 019 at any time, day or night, and we will respond as quickly as possible.
Sometimes, yes. Two things commonly require permission before tree work can start. First, if a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must get written consent from your local council before pruning or felling it — carrying out unauthorised work is a criminal offence that can carry a fine of up to £20,000. Second, if the tree stands in a conservation area, you must give the council six weeks' written notice (a Section 211 notice) before work begins, so it can decide whether to protect the tree. Most everyday garden trees are not protected and need no permission at all. Either way, we check the tree's status for you as part of our free survey, and we can advise on or handle the council application on your behalf. We never carry out work that would put you at risk of breaching the rules.
Always. Leaving your property clean and tidy is part of the job, not an extra. We chip the brash on site, and timber can either be removed completely or processed into seasoned firewood — whichever suits you best. You will hardly know we were there, except for a beautifully cared-for garden.
We are based in Torfaen and proudly cover Pontypool, Cwmbran, Newport, Cardiff, Abergavenny, Caerphilly, Pontypridd and more than 100 surrounding towns and villages across South Wales. If your village isn't listed on our service-area map, please just ask — we almost certainly come to you.
For routine tree surgery and hedge work we can usually arrange a site visit within a few days and then schedule the job at a time that suits you. Genuine emergencies are dealt with the same day wherever possible. We will always be honest about timescales so you know exactly what to expect.
Ready to give your trees the care they deserve? Tell us a little about your project and our friendly team will get back to you quickly with honest advice and a clear price. We look forward to helping.
