Fully Insured NPTC Qualified BS3998 Compliant

Tree surgery is the skilled care of trees by a qualified arborist — pruning, reshaping, reducing and, when necessary, safely removing trees so they stay healthy, safe and beautiful. Our team carries out every type of tree work across South Wales, from Cardiff and Newport to Cwmbran, Caerphilly, Bridgend and the valleys, all to British Standard BS3998.

Whether you have an overgrown sycamore blocking the light, a storm-damaged oak that needs attention, or a dangerous tree close to your home, we assess each tree individually and recommend the right work at the right time. The result is trees that thrive, gardens that feel bigger and brighter, and complete peace of mind that the job has been done properly.

What does our tree surgery service include?

We are fully equipped to handle every aspect of arboriculture, from delicate formative pruning on a young fruit tree to the controlled dismantling of a mature tree in a tight space. Our most requested tree surgery services include:

Tree Felling & Removal

Safe felling and section-by-section dismantling of trees that are dead, dangerous, diseased or simply in the wrong place.

Crown Reduction

Reducing a tree's height and spread while keeping its natural shape — perfect for trees that have outgrown their space.

Crown Thinning & Lifting

Letting more light and air through the canopy, and raising the lower branches to clear paths, drives and lawns.

Pruning & Dead-wooding

Removing dead, diseased or crossing branches to improve health, safety and the tree's long-term structure.

We also carry out pollarding, formative pruning, hedge-to-tree management and the safe removal of overhanging branches affecting your neighbours or the highway. If you are unsure what your tree needs, just ask — honest advice is always free.

Why choose qualified tree surgeons for the job?

Tree work is one of the most hazardous trades there is, involving chainsaws, working at height and heavy timber under tension. Choosing NPTC-qualified, fully insured arborists protects you, your property and everyone nearby. Every Hywel Jones Tree Services job is carried out to British Standard BS3998, the recognised benchmark for safe, professional tree work, and we are covered by £5 million public liability and £10 million employer's liability insurance.

Good tree surgery is about more than cutting — it is about understanding how each species grows. Pruning an oak, a beech, a birch, a willow or a leylandii conifer all call for different techniques and timing. Our knowledge of local trees means your tree is pruned to flourish, not just to look tidy for a season.

Worried about a dangerous or storm-damaged tree?

If a tree is split, leaning, dropping limbs or threatening your home, we offer a 24-hour emergency response across South Wales. Call 07525 855 019 at any time and our team will make your property safe quickly.

How does crown reduction differ from crown thinning?

These are the two most common pruning requests, and they do quite different jobs:

  • Crown reduction lowers the overall height and reduces the spread of the tree while keeping its natural outline. It is ideal for large trees overshadowing a garden, getting close to a roof, or catching too much wind.
  • Crown thinning removes a proportion of the smaller, inner branches to let more dappled light and air through the canopy, without changing the tree's size or shape.
  • Crown lifting raises the lowest branches to give clearance over a lawn, path, driveway or road.

During your free survey we will explain exactly which approach suits your tree and the outcome you want, whether that is more light, a safer structure or simply a neater shape.

Do you handle diseased trees and ash dieback?

Yes. South Wales has been significantly affected by ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus), which weakens ash trees and makes their timber brittle and unpredictable to work with. We also assess trees affected by honey fungus, bracket fungi and general decline. After inspecting the tree, we will tell you honestly whether it can be retained with careful management or whether removal is the safest option — and we never recommend felling a healthy tree that can be saved.

How we work — from first call to final tidy

We keep the whole process simple, transparent and stress-free:

  • Free site survey: we visit, assess the tree and check for any TPO or conservation-area restrictions.
  • Clear written quote: a fair, fixed price with everything explained and no hidden extras.
  • Expert work, safely done: our NPTC team completes the job to BS3998, fully insured and rigged for tight spaces.
  • Tidy & recycle: we chip the brash, process timber into seasoned firewood and leave your garden spotless.

Tree Surgery Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything homeowners and landowners across South Wales ask us about tree surgery.

Tree surgery is the skilled care and maintenance of trees by a qualified arborist. It covers tree felling, crown reduction, crown thinning, crown lifting, pollarding, dead-wooding and pruning, all carried out to British Standard BS3998 to keep your trees healthy, safe and well-shaped.

The cost depends on the size, species and location of the tree and the work involved. We provide a clear, written, no-obligation quote after a free site visit anywhere in South Wales. Because we own our own equipment rather than hiring it in, our prices stay fair and transparent with no hidden charges.

You may. Trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or growing within a conservation area need consent from your local council before work can begin. We check this for you as part of the survey and can help with the application to your local authority, whether that is Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly, Torfaen or another South Wales council.

Most tree work can be carried out safely all year round. Winter, when trees are dormant, is ideal for major pruning and felling. We avoid disturbing nesting birds during the spring and summer bird-nesting season, and we will always advise on the best timing for your particular species.

Crown reduction reduces the overall height and spread of a tree while keeping its natural shape, ideal for large trees that have outgrown their space. Crown thinning removes a portion of the smaller inner branches to let more light and air through, without changing the tree's size or outline.

Yes. For trees in confined spaces we use section dismantling and controlled rigging, lowering each piece safely rather than felling the whole tree in one go. This protects your home, fences, sheds and neighbouring gardens. Our team is fully insured for complete peace of mind.

Yes. We assess trees affected by ash dieback, honey fungus and other diseases, and advise whether the tree can be retained with management or needs to be removed. Ash dieback can make timber brittle and dangerous, so affected trees are best inspected by a qualified arborist.

Never. We chip the brash on site, remove or process the timber, and leave your garden swept and tidy. Many customers say you would hardly know we had been there, apart from a beautifully cared-for tree.

Yes. A well-judged crown reduction or crown thin can restore light to your home and garden, reduce the weight on heavy limbs and improve the tree's long-term health, all while keeping it as an attractive feature rather than removing it.

For routine tree surgery we can usually arrange a free site visit within a few days and schedule the work at a time that suits you. Dangerous or storm-damaged trees are treated as a priority and dealt with the same day wherever possible.
